During the weekend I had the pleasure to upgrade my GFs Netbook (Acer Aspire One with HD, not SSD) to Ubuntu Jaunties Netbook Remix.
I did that upgrade not via apt-get dist-upgrade, instead I choose the ubuntu netbook image and pushed it onto my USB stick.
Booting from it and installing from it worked like a charm. Well done guys, but even as the regression is documented regarding Network Manager and the WiFi card of the Acer Aspire One, I wasn’t able to connect to my Wireless LAN. It finds the wlan, but can’t connect to it, looks like that it has some problems with the WPA2 Encryption.
Using wired ethernet works…
If anyone has a workaround for the WiFi mess…just comment here or give me a link with the workaround ,-)
Anyways, the UI is charming…much better then what I installed on hardy (which is really old ;))
Cudos to all people involved :)

ah, sorry, I’ll take a look when I get home and see if I can help. I have an AAO 150 model too :)
I had a lot of problems with the Jaunty UNR on my Dell Mini when my access point was using TKIP. Flipping the encryption to AES solved all my problems and improved connectivity from my Macs, as well. Of course, going from WPA to WPA2 does this for you AFAIK, but it is worth a check.
Thx for the hint…I’ll investigate and eventually come back to the bug report on LP and confirm it…
thx
Hi, shermann. I’m curious about how beautiful the Ubuntu Jaunty Netbook Remix interface is.
Can kindly provide some screenshots of it?
Thanks.
I’ll do some screenshots :)
Hello,
I install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 Alpha 6 on my five’s Acer Aspire One (Atom 1,6 GHz, 1 GB, 160 GB hd).
I boot from USB key. No real problem with the installation.
I format the partitions in EXT4 (really fast).
Only one problem with the WiFi : I need to backlist the acer_wmi module
(I hope name is correct. I have not the Acer here)
This Sunday, a lot of update was available.
One of the update say that my backlist has been changed. Yes it’s true.
I take the new backlist, so NO blacklist for acer_wmi module.
The Acer One reboot… and WiFi is working again, correctly.
Ok, I don’t know for WPA and WPA2 …
I use WEP :-( … because if I put WPA, my children’s Nintendo DS can connect ! :-(
(Nintendo DS is a security problem… I know)
I will try with WPA2 soon.
My wife is really VERY glad with this Acer Aspire One AND Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 alpha 6 :-D
I did that (was the documented workaround for alpha6) but invane.
The same for the updates after alpha6…no blacklist anymore, wifi comes up, but can’t connect to WPA2 encrypted wifi.
But after all, everything is ok :)
You need to blacklist ath_hal as well!!! That’s it.
to get the wireless working:)
+1 for the screenshot!! :)
sudo su -c ‘echo blacklist acer_wmi >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_acer_wmi’
I don’t think you need an extension on the blacklist category, but a quick ls /etc/modprobe.d will reveal the answer to that.
I would do it myself but at work on a Win PC… Sorry!
as said…I used the workaround, and WiFi card is showing the correct network…but it can’t logon to it…whysoever…
